Better Data. Safer Roads.
Building What’s Next at the Department of Transportation
Every day, transportation officials across the country make decisions that help keep millions of drivers safe. Behind those decisions is an enormous amount of data: vehicle registrations, roadside inspections, crash records, carrier compliance information, and more.
That data needs to be accurate. It needs to be available when people need it. And it needs to move across a nationwide network of federal, state, and local systems without disrupting the work happening on the ground.
That is the kind of challenge Reveal Global Consulting was built to solve.
Through our work with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Reveal is helping modernize the technology behind mission-critical transportation data, transforming legacy systems into a faster, more reliable, and scalable data environment.
The work is called TruData. Its impact reaches far beyond technology.
The Challenge: Modernize Without Missing a Beat
For decades, FMCSA’s SAFER ecosystem has helped power transportation safety operations across the country. It connects critical information about commercial carriers, vehicles, registrations, inspections, compliance, and safety.
But the world around it changed.
More data. More users. More demand for timely information. Growing expectations for systems that can adapt quickly as technology and mission needs evolve.
Modernizing an environment like this isn't as simple as replacing old technology with something newer. The system still needs to operate while the transformation happens.
So, Reveal helped build a solution designed to do both.
Building for Today and What Comes Next
Working alongside FMCSA, Reveal helped advance TruData, a modern, cloud-based data environment designed around a simple idea: build capabilities once, build them well, and make them reusable.
Instead of creating a new custom solution every time another data source or requirement is introduced, Reveal's engineers developed reusable components that can be configured for different needs. Automated checks help catch data-quality issues earlier. More efficient processing moves information through the system faster. Cloud-based architecture gives the platform room to scale.
Throughout the transition, maintaining the availability people rely on every day remained a priority.
Today, TruData supports 14 production applications and more than 100 active users within a centralized AWS cloud environment. Automated validation has replaced time-intensive manual processes, while a reusable ingestion framework makes it faster to bring new data sources into the platform.
And the environment is designed to grow. As new applications and datasets come online, TruData’s cloud-based architecture, high-availability infrastructure, and optimized data access are built to support continuous growth across terabytes of incoming operational data while maintaining reliable, 24/7 access.
The Results Tell the Story
The impact is measurable:
Scalable infrastructure built to support terabytes of incoming operational data
99% platform availability
80% faster compliance processing
50%+ faster onboarding of new data sources
Query response times within 10 seconds
44 state-specific Inspection and Crash datasets onboarded to DOT’s DataHub
20+ public datasets onboarded
Those aren't just technology metrics.
Automated validation pipelines have helped accelerate compliance processing by 80%, reducing the manual effort required to move information through the system. TruData’s reusable ingestion framework has reduced data source onboarding timelines by more than 50%, taking a process that once required up to two weeks down to as little as two days.
Optimized data access, including improved partitioning and indexing, helps eliminate bottlenecks and keeps query response times within 10 seconds across 14 supported applications and more than 100 active users. And a high-availability AWS environment supports 99% platform availability, helping keep critical data accessible around the clock.
Bringing 44 state-specific Inspection and Crash datasets, along with more than 20 public datasets, into DOT’s DataHub helps make important transportation safety information more consistent, accessible, and useful to federal and state partners.
Better technology creates better access to trusted data. Better data supports better decisions. And in transportation, better decisions can help create safer roads.
More Than Modernization
The technology behind TruData is important. But the larger story is about how Reveal approaches complex problems.
We don't believe modernization should mean rebuilding everything again a few years from now.
We build for what comes next.
That means understanding the mission before designing the technology. Creating reusable solutions instead of one-time fixes. Modernizing critical systems without disrupting the people who depend on them. Measuring success not only by whether the technology works, but by whether it makes the mission work better.
At DOT, that approach is helping create a stronger foundation for the future of transportation data.
This is the same thinking Reveal brings to complex challenges across the federal landscape: combining deep technical expertise, mission understanding, and practical problem-solving to turn complicated systems and data into solutions people can use.
Because the best technology doesn't just modernize what already exists.
It creates what becomes possible next.
