Reveal Begins Fourth Semester of Rutgers University SEED2S Externship Partnership

Reveal and Rutgers SEED2S Launch Fall 2026 Data Science Externship

This fall, Reveal is continuing its partnership with Rutgers University’s Student Excellence, Experiential learning, and Development in Data Science (SEED2S) program. The program gives students a chance to apply their data science skills to a real-world research challenge. It also gives them experience working with career professionals.

During the 10-week externship this fall, scholars will work with Reveal mentors to explore public data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The project examines how motor carrier populations and safety activities vary by state and over time. FMCSA data cover motor carrier registration, inspections, crashes, violations, and enforcement activity. This gives students a rich set of information to explore.

Applying Data Science to Motor Carrier Safety

Motor carriers play an important role in moving goods and passengers across the United States. The industry varies by location, fleet size, type of operation, cargo, hazardous material status, and other factors. The Fall 2026 SEED2S cohort will bring these data sources together. Students will combine FMCSA registration and safety data to study trends by location, operation, and time. They will then make their findings easier for both technical and nontechnical audiences to understand.

Building Skills Through the Full Project Lifecycle

The Reveal externship gives students experience beyond data analysis. During the semester, scholars will work through the full project lifecycle. They will learn the data, develop research questions, prepare the data, explore findings, and build a dashboard. Students will also create a reproducible GitHub repository, an interactive dashboard, a white paper, and a final presentation. The dashboard will compare motor carrier registration details and safety activity. The white paper will explain the project’s methods, findings, limits, and possible impact.

This structure helps scholars strengthen their technical skills and learn how to turn a research question into a finished product.

Creating a Pathway from Externship to Internship

Reveal’s work with SEED2S also creates longer-term opportunities for emerging talent. The externship gives students hands-on experience and helps them build relationships with Reveal mentors. It also shows students how their academic skills can support professional work.

For several former participants, this pathway continued after the semester externship was over. Chloe Callung ’25, Edwin Zheng ’26, and Aaroh Patel ’26 were hired as Reveal summer interns after taking part in the externship program. Their move from externs to interns shows how programs like SEED2S can connect academic learning with early-career experience. As the Fall 2026 cohort begins its work, we look forward to the questions they explore, the insights they uncover, and the solutions they develop in the coming weeks!
